OUGD603: Brief 1 — Madison - Type Specimen Research

Before making my type specimen, I wanted to look into existing products promoting typefaces, be them digitally promoting or through a print book.

Vorsicht Display — Walter Rothe

Opinion: Although I'm not keen on the typeface being sold in this specimen, i like the way the specimen itself has been designed. It has a playful tone of voice, and also experiments with the typeface at a vast range of point sizes.

Knockout — Two Times Elliot

"H&F Knockout – A small internal project to explore a few of our favourite typefaces. Using our in-house risograph we were able to produce three seperate type specimens exploring the dynamic and characteristics of our selected typeface."

Opinion: I like the playful element of the above specimen. It's also clear that risograph printing has worked well with the concept of the typeface, making it seem zine-like.

Collator — Vince Lo

"To showcase the development of Collator, I created a Process/Specimen book that captured the research, context and application of the typeface.

Along with the specimen, two glyph books were created to showcase the individual character.

Collator is now available for download on Practice Foundry"

Opinion: These two specimens for the above type family work fantastically. I love the idea of creating a whole set of collateral, looking at the typeface in depth. The typeface has been left in black and white, which doesn't distract you from the shape and form.

Luthier — Adria Gomez
"Luthier is a contemporary serif typeface. A transitional fontfamily with sharp serifs, high contrast, and four styles. Free for personal and commercial use"

Opinion: The main thing I have gathered from the above image is the use of a simple colour scheme. 3 or so colours have been used over the entire (digital) specimen. This works really well to create consistancy, and to not distract the eye. I also think the colour choice is important to match the certain connotations the typeface gives. I want to carefully select my colour scheme, limiting myself to 3 colours max.

Voltaire — YOMAGICK

"Voltaire is a light, regular and bold set of grotesk font. Design of the typeface Voltaire is a personal project driven by the curiosity. I wanted to create font fully based on geometric shapes with minimal optimalizing intervention.

The font has contemporary style, at the same time is quite raw. The style of the font is inspired by the old Polish documents and book covers that I found around my house. Its inspiration also comes from London's underground typography and Polish road signs typography that is quite unique."

Opinion: I like the simplicity of the above specimen, and also the idea of showing it within usage. However, I feel more examples of usage are needed.

Hans Kendrick — Alfredo Marco

"Hans Kendrick is a simple, geometric and versatile typeface with inspirations from futura and avenir.

Opinion: The main image I like above is the full character set. I feel thing would be great to show within my specimen, due to the sheer number of characters available.
