OUGD603: Brief 14 — Intern Magazine - Independant Magazine Research

I thought it was important to research briefly into independent magazines, and see if there is an overall running theme, or any gaps in the market.

032c is a contemporary culture magazine that fiercely believes in the intelligence of its readers, and rises to the challenge of surprising them.

Another Escape is a bi-annual magazine concerned with the real people behind ideas, practices and processes. It celebrates peoples’ passion and enthusiasm, whatever their pursuit may be. Each issue presents stories of inspiring people who are dedicated to doing what they love.

Brownbook is a bi-monthly urban lifestyle guide focusing on design, culture and travel across the Middle East and North Africa.

Cereal is a quarterly travel and lifestyle magazine based in Bristol, UK.

Frieze magazine was set up in 1991 and is the leading magazine of contemporary art and culture. Frieze includes essays, reviews and columns by today’s most forward-thinking writers, artists and curators.

Kinfolk is a quarterly magazine based in Portland, Oregon that collects ideas from an international community of artists, writers, photographers, cooks and others who are interested in creating small gatherings. From recipes and guides to photo stories and essays, it explores all aspects of a creative lifestyle and celebrates the small things that make life good.

Modern Matter is a biannual publication that records the ways in which new and developing technology affects style and culture, as well as providing a focus on contemporary and conceptual art.

So It Goes is a magazine that champions the original voices of today across seven chapters: The Actors, The Directors, The Artists, The Collection, The Musicians, The Places and The Writers.

The Modernist Magazine is a quarterly publication based in the North of England which focuses on 20th century modernist architecture and design.

Conclusions

- Many Independant magazines focus on the arts, something to avoid.
- Many focus on travel, again something that could be avoided.
- They all seem to be a lot more experimental with their design than regular magazines.
- A lot of them focus on travel, looking at global culture or a general area. None are as specific as a country.
